An island in the eastern Mediterranean, split by the UN Green Line since 1974. The line runs through the centre of Nicosia, where visitors cross north on foot at Ledra Street. Flights land at Larnaka, the main gateway, or at Pafos for the west. There are no trains, so most people drive, on the left, or use intercity buses linking the main towns in one to three hours. One suggested six-night route moves from Ayia Napa or Protaras to Nicosia, Limassol and Paphos.

Good to know

  • Airports at Larnaka and Pafos
  • No train or metro system

Things to do in Cyprus

When to go

  1. April–early June

Warm enough to swim but not too hot, with thin crowds. Over 40 orchid species flower, villages hold festivals and cafés open terraces.

  2. July–August

Hot and dry with little rain. July is among the hottest and busiest months, hotels fill fast and overheating is common.

  3. September–October

A second summer without the crowds: hot days and very warm sea in September, slightly cooler October for sightseeing and vineyards.

  4. November–March

Very mild winter, with possible snow in the Troodos Mountains and a fair chance of rain on the coast. February is still quiet.

Practical tips

  • Expect two spellings for most towns, such as Limassol/Lemesos and Paphos/Pafos, on signs, timetables and websites.
  • L.L.L.A Intercity Buses Ltd connects Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Ayia Napa and Protaras, with most routes taking one to three hours.
  • Town buses usually sell tickets from the driver, and some cities offer rechargeable travel cards.
  • If you are new to driving on the left, take extra care at roundabouts and junctions for the first few days.
  • Carry euros and Turkish lira when crossing north, as cards are not always accepted, and be ready to buy car insurance if driving.
